HendersonHabitat.org : How You Can Help
 |
 |
Willingness.
Willingness to do what needs to be done! Skills are helpful but Habitat will teach and train you for the task. Habitat will provide the tools and supervision you need. Henderson Habitat welcomes willing volunteers, female and male, youth and senior adults, regardless of race, national origin, religious or political persuasion, or socio-economic circumstance. As an ecumenical Christian, faith-based organization, Habitat for Humanity prohibits harassment of any sexual, religious, racial or ethnic basis and does not allow political or sectarian persuasive conversation or campaigning. Youth, fourteen to eighteen years of age, are welcomed to volunteer with Habitat when accompanied and supervised by their parent or legal guardian, youth minister or teacher.

Construction Volunteers
Opportunities to volunteer with Habitat for Humanity to build or rehabilitate houses are generally available year-round, dependent upon the construction schedule. Habitat’s “Thursday Crew” is a fellowship of retired gentlemen who work Thursday mornings after eating breakfast as a group. Fred Lauver is the leader of the “T-Crew” and welcomes new volunteers. Other week day and Saturday morning construction opportunities are also available. Simply call Habitat (869-9011) to learn of the location and work planned for the day. Construction crews generally begin work at 8am. Open-toed foot wear is prohibited at all construction sites. Drinking water and tools are provided.

Administrative Committees
The work of receiving, reviewing and approving applications for Habitat housing, raising the funds necessary to build the houses, acquiring suitable building lots and supporting Habitat’s families as first-time homeowners falls on the dedicated volunteers that make up Habitat’s administrative committees and the Board of Directors.
The Board of Directors meet monthly to guide the affiliate with policies and plans that insure Habitat's mission is fulfilled. The Directors employ the Executive Director to manage the affiliate’s daily operations and supervise staff, give final approval of all applicants for Habitat housing and the acquisition of building sites, and oversee the financial strength of the affiliate. Generally, the Board is comprised of volunteers who have proven their interest in and support of Habitat’s ministry with prior service on committees, at fund-raisers, and with personal financial contributions. The Family Services Committee receives, reviews and recommends the disposition of applications for Habitat housing, secures family advocates for approved applicants and establishes the requirements for Habitat housing. Family Services meets monthly.
The Construction Committee assists the affiliate in acquisition of building lots, oversees house designs, building materials and costs and the construction schedule for each family. The Resource Development Committee seeks to find ways to provide not only the funds necessary to build houses but also to promote volunteer opportunities and in-kind contributions. It also supports and offers direction to the Restore and oversee the collection and recycling of aluminum cans. The Legal Issues Committee meets to discuss delinquent mortgage payment issues and other legal concerns as needed. The Church Relations Committee meets monthly to strengthen Habitat’s ties to local congregations as an ecumenical, Christian, faith-based mission ministry. One of its most important challenges is to organize an Apostles’ Build by which a group of churches commit to finance and build a Habitat house. Persons wishing to volunteer on any administrative committee are encouraged to contact the committee chair or call Bob Hicks, Executive Director, at Habitat (270) 869-9011.
